Bovine collagen comes from cows’ tendons, bones, hides, joints etc while marine collagen comes from fish skin, bones and scales. Bovine collagen contains collagen types I and III. In our body, Type I is the most abundant collagen and Type III is the second most abundant. Type I is found throughout our body – in skin, hair, bones and nails. Type III is found particularly in our digestive tract and other areas that require elasticity (like our blood vessels).
Marine collagen contains only Type I – therefore it is considered the preferred collagen when tackling concerns relating to skin, hair and nails.
As marine collagen has a smaller particle size than bovine, it is absorbed and digested approximately 1.5x more efficiently. Usually, marine collagen is more expensive than bovine collagen. Marine collagen is considered a sustainable product as it uses the by-products of the fish industry which would otherwise go to waste.
In summary, while both can be good options, marine collagen is usually the premium choice as it has a cleaner, quicker absorption rate than bovine and is more targeted toward skin, hair and nail benefits. Many people wishing to minimise their meat intake prefer to take marine over bovine sources however if you have a fish allergy, marine collagen is not recommended.
